Purpose of Significance

This is essentially an early bit of credit-giving for a term I’m likely to use a fair bit on this blog and elsewhere: Purpose of Significance.

It’s a phrase coined by Will McInnes in his recently published book Culture Shock. It’s a genuinely inspiring read and I thoroughly recommend it. In fact reviews don’t come much more glowing than the one I gave it over here!

Will believes that businesses need to find a Purpose of Significance beyond pure financial results. I do too. I just didn’t know what to call it before.

Will reveals the thinking behind Purpose of Significance in the first chapter of Culture Shock. If you can’t wait for the book to arrive, then you can read the first draft of it here. In true social style, Will posted his draft chapters as he wrote them to garner feedback and input. Lovely.

Anyway, as I say, I’ll no doubt refer to Purpose of Significance many times in the future and in case I ever forget to give Will appropriate credit, I’m doing so now.

  1. I think you’ll like it. And I absolutely agree, there’s nothing wrong with making money. It’s making money solely for profit’s sake, rather than with a more socially-oriented purpose in mind. Catch up soon I hope. M
